Hello and welcome back! So new year means spring cleaning. Starting fresh means getting rid of all the stuff that we have collected over the year (or even years) and clean it out. As you go through your closet making your three piles(keep, donate, and toss), ask yourself these five questions below:
- Have I worn this in the past 12 months?
- If it is damaged(ripped, broken, stained, holes, etc), will I ACTUALLY go and get it repaired?
- Does it still fit?
- Will I ever wear it again?
- Do I feel Confident wearing this?
Okay don’t get overwhelmed, but let’s jump into it!
DONATE
Donating is another great way to get rid of unwanted items, but also put them in the hands of someone who truly needs them. Here are a couple places you can take your items too:
- Goodwill
- Salvation Army
- Dress for success helps the financial independence of disadvantaged women, not only offering them support and development tools to further their career, but also professional attire for interviews and jobs.
- Cinderella Project- is a great organization to donate any old prom dresses or evening wear!
SELL
When you need to get rid of items that you have, but they are in good condition, a great way to make a profit is to sell. It would be anyone’s dream to sell your old stuff and new clothes magically appear in your closet, but in reality, it is expensive! eBay and Amazon are not the only selling services available anymore.
Two places that I have repeatedly used is Plato’s Closet and Buffalo Exchange. You bring all of the items you want to sell, they choose which ones they want, and then give you money for it the same day. The items they do not want, you can either take back or have them donate to charity.
If you want to sell online, Poshmark is great with and has a 20% commission fee. Also, Mercari is the latest up and coming app and they do not charge to list items for sale.
TOSS
There isn’t much to explain here. If it has to go, it needs to go! If you still haven’t gotten that stain out,
fixed the hole or rip in that top, or the zipper is stillll broken … .let it go. I promise it’ll be ok and you probably forgot you still had it until now.
KEEP
Obviously, this step is pretty straightforward. Once you’ve weeded out all of the no’s in your closet, you can then move on to the organization step below!
ORGANIZE!
Below are some of what I do to keep my closet organized. However how you organize your space is completely up to you and your level of OCD.
Color coordination: If you want to color coordinate your closet you simply follow this color scheme as follows:
Yellow
Orange
Fuschia
Red
Purple
Blue
Green
Brown
White
Gray
Black
2. I hang my clothes in this order:
Tops and Blouses (tank top > long sleeve)
Sweaters
Jackets
Dresses (I have the shorter dresses together and color coordinated. Also, long dresses are hanging together and color coordinated. Those are in a different part of the closet due to how its set up.)
Pants
Denim
3. Matching hangers!
Go buy some matching hangars in the same color. They are fairly inexpensive unless you’re going all out with some wooden or velvet hangers. I got mine at either Walmart or target for $3 or $4 for a pack of ten. All of my hangers are black!
4. Closet freshness
Keep your clothes smelling good and the moths out of there. I like the Air Boss Closet freshener. You can get the ones that hang in between your clothes, or there is this whole dehumidifier. If you have a favorite one that you use let me know so I can try it out!
Do you have any other tips for organizing your closet? Comment and let me know! Also, when you finish organizing your closet, email me before and after pictures! I would love to see what you did 🙂
