Hello and welcome back to The Visual Aspect! Today I am writing about capsule wardrobes. What are they, how they can be helpful, should you have one? I am sure there are days when you look at your wardrobe and it is overwhelming. I also have felt like that. For an example, there are times when I look and I have bought so much of one color it is taking over the closet.
What a capsule wardrobe provides is simplicity. It makes styling your outfits more efficient and you get the most out of your clothing for a smaller investment. For this post, we will dive into what it looks like to have a capsule wardrobe and is this something that you should create.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
I did a little research and found the origin of what a capsule wardrobe is and it was started in London by a woman named Susie Faux.
“Capsule wardrobe is a term coined by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called “Wardrobe” in the 1970s. According to Faux, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces.”
“A small collection of clothes that can be put together in different ways and includes everything you would normally need to wear:”
So basically it a collection of essentials that you need to wear on a day to day basis. I have seen collections ranging from 10 to 37 pieces. However, in my opinion, I think the sweet spot would be no more than 20 pieces. The best way to create these capsules would be per season as well. Many styles will be able to overlap into each season, so don’t think you would have to buy 20 separate pieces for each season.
Is this for me?
You can honestly google “how to create a capsule wardrobe” and hundreds and hundreds of posts will pop up with so many variations. No matter if you have a background on this topic or not, ask yourself what is it you would like to accomplish with this wardrobe?
Is it simplicity?…a cost-saving way to build a wardrobe?…versatility? Ask yourself what you truly want from this so you can be crystal clear. Also like we discussed on a previous post on a wardrobe that compliments your lifestyle, you need to plan your wardrobe around the activity that dominates that majority of your life. That is how you will the most use out a capsule wardrobe. If your wardrobe is not yet where you want it to be, I highly encourage you to visit my previous blog posts. I cover a lot on those beginning stages of building your ideal wardrobe.
So how do I get started?
If this is something that you want to pursue I will give you a brief outline on a couple of tips. Again, capsule wardrobe’s can be interpreted in many different ways. I have yet to try one myself. This is what I gathered from my research and I put my own personal spin to it. If I were to pursue a simple lifestyle.
- Do add print and color and don’t shy away from bringing variety to the mix.
- Don’t add too many pieces. Less is definitely more in this scenario. Even from a 10-piece capsule wardrobe, you can create about 30 outfits.
- This does not include accessories. I believe that accessories and jewelry can enhance an outfit in many different ways. I feel like leaving the accessories out of it can help you add so much variety and personality to your capsule wardrobe.
- Make sure to remember your basics! This is the foundation of your wardrobe whether you have a capsule wardrobe or not. Furthermore, essential basics while be great layering pieces and provide that versatility you will need.
