Investing In Your Wardrobe

As we continue on the journey of creating an ideal wardrobe you might wonder when you should purchase investment pieces. I have thought of this as well over the years and have made better decisions about the quality of clothing I purchase. This is only applied in a few areas because I am not at the point in my life to wear all of my clothing are investment pieces.

Sometimes there are styles that I like to have that is at Zara and I want it. I don’t think that will ever go away anytime soon. Whether you have decided to create a capsule wardrobe or you are wanting to update some pieces in your current wardrobe. I will highlight a couple of areas of your wardrobe you can invest in.

This method works pretty well if you do have a capsule wardrobe. I think if you have a smaller amount of clothing options that you constantly wear every day, you would want to get better quality pieces over time. That way it will last longer and you won’t have to replace your black pair of skinny jeans every year.

Jackets and Outerwear

For this category, a jacket can be anything from a blazer to a denim jacket. Outerwear I am categorizing as anything heavier than a denim jacket. This is an area of your wardrobe that is perfect to invest in. Especially if you are in an environment where you need to dress business casual most of the time. Blazers can definitely be a staple piece in your wardrobe and are multi-functional.

Denim

When you finally find that perfect pair of jeans it is like the heavens opened up and smiled down on you. Now imagine if those jeans lasted you 3+ years. What?! Yes, that is something that can happen when you invest in your denim. I had a pair of citizens that lasted almost 6 years and then I finally retired them last year. They aren’t cheap but definitely worth the investment.

Shoes

Last but not least is shoes! I love shoes so much and if you ask me this is where I would start. I literally wear my shoes until I can t wear them any longer. The longer they last, of course, would be better. Again it goes back to that quality. Will this pair get me through another 2-3 months? Or can I use them for a year or so? Here is my secret to buying great quality shoes at a low price…shop offseason!

If you know that Dillards, Zara, and Aldo are having a sale right after Christmas and New Years, put some money aside so you can buy yourself some nice boots for a fraction of the cost. Same goes for styles for the summer and spring. Be a smart shopper and sign up for those emails to be notified if you have your eye on a pair of shoes somewhere.

One other place to purchase investment pieces are on sites like Poshmark and the Real Real. There is no shame at all in second-hand shopping and you will probably find much better pricing than you could at a sale. If you are not into that another option would be outlet malls that have stores like Nordstrom Rack, Saks Off 5th, and J. Crew Mercantile.
