Interview Questions

1. Could you start by sharing a bit about yourself?

I’m somewhat of a nomad, I am from Panama and I’ve lived in Canada, Switzerland and now Colombia where I’m working on this blog and starting an environmental consulting company!

I’m a scientist who needs to be exposed to art on a regular basis. I love museums, and I spend most of my free time reading. I used to do ballet, but I found a gym close to my place that teaches krav maga so I want to give that a try!

2. Could you tell us about your blog and what inspired you to start one?

The short version is that I started The Conscious Fashionista on an angry impulse after watching The True Cost. I was doing research for an ethical brand that I chose as my MBA thesis topic, and watching that documentary was the tipping point for me.

It turns out that fashion is at the intersection of topics that interest me: environment, biotechnology, innovation, human rights and feminism. So I’ve decided to turn the blog into a full-time project because my goal is to make ethical fashion mainstream. We can’t afford to keep it a niche, we need educated consumers to put pressure on governments and brands.

3. Who is your fashion inspiration?

Great question! For a while I thought I could not be a fashion blogger because I rarely look at fashion magazines or follow celebrities. I have no idea what’s trending or what’s the color of the season! I usually go to Pinterest and Polyvore for inspiration.

4. How would you describe your style?

It’s a mix between minimalism and rocker chic. The only patterns I wear are leopard and stripes, so I add interest to my outfits by combining textures, statement necklaces or a pop of color in my accessories. I like combining men’s fashion with feminine pieces and I keep my jewelry to a minimum.

5. What are your favorite stores to shop at, and why?

Since I’ve been moving so much in the past 3 years, I stopped buying clothes because it became a burden. However, if I needed to get something I would try to buy online from ethical brands first. I just ordered some things from People Tree, Armed Angels, and I got an awesome pair of deck shoes from MDMA Shoes!

6. What is an item you splurge on?

SHOES. Always shoes.

7. What is your next fashion must have?

I really want to find a nice fitting, black blazer.

8. How do you handle fashion trends? (Do you like to keep up with them or not pay attention to them at all…)

I don’t pay attention to them at all. Fashion should be fun and a way to express yourself, but we tend to confuse “being trendy” with “having style”. It’s not the same thing. Right now wearing corsets is trending, and I will probably try it because I already own a corset, otherwise I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy one just because I’ve been told it’s “in”.

9. Do you have any fashion rules when putting an outfit together?

Hmmm, I guess my rule is that I should always be comfortable. I don’t like to be worried about showing skin, side boobs or my underwear!

10. For my readers that are looking to freshen up their wardrobe, what is a great fashion tip you can share with them?

😊 I am obviously an advocate for ethical brands, but my advice is that you should buy clothes that can be mixed and matched with at least three other things that you already own.
